I wasn't a big fan of all-in-one “media center” apps before and I prefered having one specialized app for video playing, one for image viewing, one for listening to music, and so on. Therefore only this year I discovered Kodi and its impressive benefits. And that was mostly thanks to its add-ons. Using all kinds of extensions, this powerful tool enables you to do a lot of things, including watching the newest movie releases from online sources. Don't get me wrong, it doesn't provide any content on its own and neither it facilitates or approves accessing pirated content. I'm just saying that by installing third-party plugins one can use Kodi to access various online streams, and not just to play content from owned sources (DVDs, local drives, etc.).
Kodi is actually popular since many years ago, when it was known as XBMC. It's famous for plenty of reasons, not only the add-ons that impressed me. It's a truly powerful media center that comes with a handy user interface optimized for being used with televisions and remote controls. Its interface is also really intuitive and straightforward.
I also like about this tool that since I started using it, it proved capable of playing pretty much any file format I tried. It supports a large variety of file types and formats, regardless of what media they are: videos, music, podcasts, or other kind.
When it comes to playing music files, Kodi offers plenty of cool features such as tagging support, MusicBrainz integration, and playlist management. As for image viewing, Kodi offers fewer features and options, but it's still a decent choice for this task. Anyway, its best qualities are revealed when it comes to video management and playback needs. Kodi can handle movies and TV shows like few other similar tools, as it offers hard to ignore advantages like extensive library management capabilities and support for streaming to UPnP compatible devices in your home.
To sum it all up, Kodi is a great tool that leaves no room for criticism and, best of all, is also completely free.
